Daily we will have students responsible for writing down our agenda message and key events on our class website. Parents and students are encouraged to check this page daily.
Students are still encouraged to continue with their personal written agenda as an organization tool for their school responsibilities.
A student agenda will be provided for each GATE Grade 4 student.
GATE Grade 4 2014-15
Last Day of school
Dear GATE 4,
Wow, what a fantastic year it has been. It has been a pleasure to be part of your lives and see you grow and develop. We remember the first big think we gave you. Hmmm, we said, there is a lot of potential with these students but they have a long way to go. Now we are amazed at how you have stretched your minds and written thoughtful answers and asked interesting questions. We hope you continue to grow personally, socially, and intellectually in all your years of schooling.
Parents - Thank you for your support. A key part of your child's success has been your dedication to the program. A positive relationship with home and school always benefits your child. We hope you have a fantastic summer, relaxing, playing, and enjoying family time together. We look forward to reconnecting with all of you in the fall.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Armitage & Mr. deBoer

Sharing Circle: Update
We had two students that were concerned with a behavior happening in our classroom and they requested a sharing circle. First thing the next morning we organized a sharing circle with the whole class to hear and discuss their community issue.
The Concern: During Group work there are some students that interrupt and talk over other students. With the concern presented in a mature way (not naming names or specific events) the class then went around the circle sharing their solutions to the problem. Students had the opportunity to share or pass. The following is a collection of student ideas: - personal ideas are respected - Everybody has the same share time and sit on the same level - you need to respect the post [original idea] by staying on the main idea - everybody needs to be on task - please stay on topic (said 4x) - we don't inter up others when talking - we 'plus' ideas [build on others ideas] - help me when I am frustrated - don't just agree but see why the idea might be wrong [critical thinking] - I need feedback on how I did to see how I can improve - explain your thinking - I need choice so I'm put in a group with workers - People are focusing - Everybody shares ideas and listens to ideas - be self aware of how much you're talking and let others talk - remind people who are sharing a lot to not Since the Sharing Circle, we have been able to remind the students of their ideas before and during group work, as well it has empowered the students by developing a common language around the issue so it is easier for them to address this issues with their peers during various projects. |

See the videos above!) - Review Social Test information (Tests were not returned, however information was reviewed to reinforce gaps that the test identified. Test 2 will now have climate questions for all 6 regions.) - Math: Multiplication Strategies 1-10 - IPP Time (2 hours) - Native Guest Speakers for GATE 4 were not able to come today to talk about the significant of the CIRCLE. We continued on with our own sharing circle to build community spirit and trust. It was really special to see all the student's place their marker within the circle and most place it in or near the centre. This represents their feeling of belonging within the community. We also carried the conversation to talk about asking and receiving help. When you express a need to the group we have a responsibility to try to meet that need, and when the help is extended to a person it is on them to then reach out and accept that support. For example, when someone expressed a need for friendship during recess, others came forward and made a promise to play with them. Now during next recess it is their responsibility to accept their invitation and go play. - Valentine's Time (30 min of eating the cookies we decorated and card sharing) - Gym: Ping Pong |

CELEBRATION SIGN-UP
It would be more engaging and powerful for our students to speak to their projects during the afternoon of the Celebration. It is not a requirement for students to sign up for a time slot as the afternoon is designed for families to visit the many classroom displays as they please. However, students from GATE Grade 4 are being invited to sign-up for half hour time slots, if they would like to. This would allow them to share, demonstrate and speak about their robot project as visitors come and see our work during the Celebration. Parents please write in the agenda the time slot that your child may participate in,if they would like to. |

Critical thinking and questioning are cornerstones to learning. Today during Silly Video Friday, many student and teacher generated questions and ideas were shared. It was a time of rich conversations and explorations into topics that we normally may not visit. Here is a small smattering of questions that came up during that time.
After watching a few videos, what did you notice? What are your questions? Who would you share them with? Why them?
After watching a few videos, what did you notice? What are your questions? Who would you share them with? Why them?
What variables are constant and why?

Is this illegal? Is it wrong? Can it be not illegal but wrong?

POWER OF WORDS: Guess what was changed on the sign to create such a strong response. (This was the lead into our LA time today.)
|
Where do you see the math in this video? How is this art? Who is the artist (participants, the band, director, etc)
|
Is this a manufactured video or authentic? Why would anyone want to take the time, $ and energy to make a video that looks like a home movie?
|
What do we do to get noticed? Is there value in spending the $ to get this house sold?

Can a jetpack equal the artistic value of ballet or piano?

Today was a very unique day. With no power and very few busses showing up, we had very few kids show up to school. We started the day with all the students gathering in the staffroom with flashlights. We then broke into grade groups, took attendance and then went to our designated areas for activities. The power turned on about 10:30 and after a brief assembly GATE 4 rotated through music and gym till lunch. In the afternoon we spent our time in centers until home time. Thank you to everybody for their cooperation and patience today. We hope everybody stays safe tonight and that tomorrow will be back to normal! Sept 11, 2014Daily Happening:
